Asthma – How to Control Things That Makes it Worse


Asthma attacks can occur anytime, anywhere without any signs or symptoms. Here are some possible things that one can control to prevent asthma attacks.

Allergens

  1. Dander of Animals: Many people are allergic to fur or feathers so please avoid them.
  2. Dust Mites: Most common type of allergy in Asthma patients and very difficult to avoid in day to day life. But few things can be done to keep its effect to the minimum
    • Cover your mattress with dust proof cover.
    • Pillow covers should be dust proof and wash very frequently in hot water above 130 degrees F.
    • Wash beds and sheets once a week in hot water.
    • Humidity in the house should be very low.
    • Keep away from cloth covered cushions, pillows etc.
    • Keep out of stuffed toys.
  3. Pollen: Generally pollens are majority of asthma triggering factors. Stay indoors from late mornings to afternoons as pollen counts is highest at that time.
  4. Smoke: Smoke from anywhere like traffic, cigarette smoking or any other burning source should be avoided.
  5. Strong Odors & Sprays: Do not use strong perfumes, body sprays. Keep away from kerosene, wood burning stove etc.
  6. Cockroaches: Many people are allergic to dry droppings and remains of cockroaches. To prevent this always keep food items in tight closed containers. Use gels or sprays to kill them but make sure that you are not in the room and stay away unless the odor has become less or almost gone.
  7. Vacuum Cleaning: During vacuum all the dust mites and dust in the house is spread all over and hence keep away from it. If there is no option then use a dust mask or a filter of a good quality.
  8. Foods & Beverages: Many people might be allergic to certain foods & beverages this can be determined by an allergy test done and then can be avoided.
  9. Medicines: Please inform your doctor if you are on any sort of medication so that if there are any chances of asthma getting triggered by it can be prevented.
